How to Properly Practice Gratitude

There are 2 types of gratitude that we need to feel daily. One is to Allah and the other is towards people.

Allah says:
And We had certainly given Luqman wisdom [and said], "Be grateful to Allah ." And whoever is grateful is grateful for [the benefit of] himself. And whoever denies [His favor] - then indeed, Allah is Free of need and Praiseworthy. (Quran, Luqman 31:12)
Abu Huraira reported: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Whoever does not thank people has not thanked Allah.” (Sunan Abī Dāwūd).

Gratitude For Allah
Think of 1 thing you’re grateful to Allah for today.

When you’re writing down what you’re grateful to Allah for or thinking of the things that Allah has blessed you with, make sure that you are deeply processing it. Don’t just think about it but also feel it. You can use all your 5 senses to make the processing deeper.

Now show that gratitude by obeying Allah and doing more good.

Gratitude Towards People
Think of 1 thing you’re grateful to someone for today. Show that appreciation by telling that person or writing a thank you note and giving it to him/her today. Research says that when you do this, you not only make that person happier you’ll make yourself happier as well.

When you’re thanking people for something that they’ve done for you, focus on the person. Say or write “You’re so thoughtful for minding the children. Thank you. You’re such a great friend...(other person focused) rather than “You’ve made my day by minding the kids. Thank you. It took a load off me. By minding the kids, I could get more done...(you and thing focused).

When you focus on the other person it makes them feel seen but when you focus on yourself or the thing done then the other person feels unseen. It doesn’t have a strong positive effect on them.

A happier you means a happier family InshaAllah.
