Book Review: Muslim Girl Growing Up

Title: Muslim Girl Growing Up: A Guide to Puberty
Author: Natalia Nabil
Publisher: Prolance
Recommended for: Preteen Girls

If you have a daughter who's heading towards the teenage years and is too shy to ask you about puberty or you're to embarrassed to do so then this is the book to give her. Use it to start discussions. It's written in easy to understand language and has illustrations to accompany it.

The main topic is about menstruation and cleanliness. It'll give your daughter instructions on what it is, what to do during and after the period, what you can't do when one has the period, how to clean oneself with ghusl and how to keep clean generally.

My advise is: do talk to your daughter about it. You should have open communications with your daughter that she can talk to you about anything. Once she or you have introduced the subject then you can give her this book to read. Maybe she likes to keep the information in one place where she can refer to it later or maybe it'll open up more discussions on the topic.

Remember, there is no shyness when it comes to seeking knowledge as this famous hadeeth from Umm Salamah demonstrates: Um-Sulaim came to Allah's Apostle and said, "Verily, Allah is not shy of (telling you) the truth. Is it necessary for a woman to take a bath after she has a wet dream (nocturnal sexual discharge?) The Prophet replied, "Yes, if she notices a discharge." Um Salama, then covered her face and asked, "O Allah's Apostle! Does a woman get a discharge?" He replied, "Yes, let your right hand be in dust (An Arabic expression you say to a person when you contradict his statement meaning "you will not achieve goodness"), and that is why the son resembles his mother." (Al Bukhari)

Teach your daughter that it's alright to come to you to ask about anything. Puberty is a time when your daughter will need your guidance. Let it be from you who is a more reliable source and not from friends or the internet, both of which are not always based on the sunnah.
