There are two situations where you can find teaching children at multiple levels. The first is where you have a group of children with different ages and different abilities (you can read about this here ‘Teaching Multiple Levels Part 1: Homeschooling Multi-Age Children’). The second is in a classroom with same age children but different abilities. In this article I will address this second situation.
There are many areas to differentiate your teaching in a multiple abilities classroom. This includes content, learning process, student’s output, learning environment, materials, time frame and assessment. Different teachers will have different preferences but to me the most important ones are what you teach, what activities you provide and what students are expected to produce to demonstrate their learning.
